About Gonzalo Mico		Genealogy - Is the study of the family history, especially through its lineage. First Times - The first genealogies were by oral tradition from generation to generation. The people of the first times thought they came from animals or plants, which were called "totems". In ancient Greece and Rome the nobles' families believed they came from gods or heroes. Middle Ages - In this time the genealogy became of first importance, because the feudal ranks and the proprietorship of lands depended of the ancestral lineage. Modern Times - Although today the genealogy is less important legally, everybody has a surname. Some persons like Madonna, Tomatito, Sting or Björk are exceptions, but there are famous artists like George Benson, Marianne Faithfull, and Jim Hall that continue using their surnames. A surname is not only a word or a sound. They were introduced when the societies became more complexes, and it was necessary a more effective system for individual identification. Classification * Ocupational: Derivates from the patriarch or founder's occupation (ex: Carpenter, Miller, etc); sometimes by the job place (ex: Bishop, etc). * Appellative: By a characteristic or attribute (ex: White, Quick, Brown, etc). * From places: The place of the founder (ex: Norma from Normandy, Bosque etc). * Patronymic: By the father (ex: Fernández from Fernando, Erickson from Erick's son). * Matronymic: By the mother (ex: Di Sofía). Origin of surname Micó - The surname Micó is of the patronymic classification. Some investigators (Hans, Hodges and Dauzat) believe that Micó is one diminutive form of Michel, which come from Hebrew Mich-el, meaning, "Who is like God?" having its origin in minor biblical characters, and also in an archangel, protector of Israel. In Christian tradition, Michael is a warrior archangel who defeats Satan. For that reason the name was very popular in Europe, especially in military and knightly families. Among the early historic references, we find: Richard Micó (1628-1694), composer in the Court of Lord Petre in Thordon Hall, and organist of the queen Henrietta Marie, wife of the king Charles II; he was buried in the church St.Paul, Covent Garden, London. Sir Samuel Micó (1610-1665), councilman of London, who when received the title of Knight in the Court of Charles II, he got in 1665 the Coat of the Micó family in London. Edward Micó (1628-1678), religious, he died in the jail of Tyburn as one of the Titus Oates's victim in popish plot. Some investigators assert that surname Micó is Italian, but others say it is of English or French origin.
